Understanding Permissions

A Permission defines what access rights a user or group has to an Item. Permissions are assigned to an ItemType to define security for all Items of that type. Permissions can also be assigned to Life Cycle states to change the security of an Item over its lifetime. Permissions define which Identities may:

  • Get to retrieve Items in viewing mode.
  • Update to claim and edit Items.
  • Delete to delete Items.
  • Can Discover to search for Items.
  • Show Permission Warning to show a warning message if access is restricted to the identity.
  • Can Change Access to change Item’s Permissions.

Some standard Aras Innovator Identities that can be tied to Permissions are explained here:

  • Manager is responsible for the management, usage, and review of the Item and is defined as the Designated User property on the Item. This property is optional.
  • Owner is the Item owner and is defined as the Assigned Creator property on the Item. This property is optional.
  • Creator is the creator of the Item and is defined as the Created By property on the Item. The Creator is assigned automatically and cannot be changed.
Note
The Aras PLM system Identity represents the change management process and does not contain any individuals. Its permissions should not be changed.
